Without proper dampening, the drifter's service life would be significantly shortened due to repeated internal impacts. It also helps maintain constant pressure between the drill bit and the rock face, which translates to faster penetration rates and more efficient breaking of the rock.

A common sign of failure is a noticeable drop in drilling power or a harsh, metallic sound from the drifter. If the internal diaphragm ruptures, nitrogen gas can enter the hydraulic system. Regular checks of the nitrogen pre-charge are key. When replacing the unit, always ensure the hydraulic system is fully depressurized first.
