It's all about smooth, predictable movement, especially when gravity is trying to take over.

When this overcenter valve starts going south, you’ll usually notice the boom or feed cylinder getting a bit jumpy or sluggish when you try to lower it. Sometimes it'll even drift down slowly when it should be holding position. If you hear a chattering noise or feel inconsistent movement, especially under load, that’s a pretty good sign the internal seals are bypassing or the spring is getting weak. It just won't hold pressure like it used to, or it won't open smoothly, making operations feel sloppy and unsafe.

Replacing one of these isn't too bad, but always make sure your system is completely de-pressurized first. When you pull the old one out, give the port a good clean, and always check the O-rings and backup rings on the new valve.
