It directly translates power from the feed motor into the linear force needed to advance the drifter during drilling and retract it. A chain in good condition maintains consistent pressure on the drill bit, which is essential for achieving a high rate of penetration and minimizing wear on drilling tools.

Over time, feed chains naturally stretch and their rollers wear down. This wear can lead to jerky feed movements and a loss of proper feed pressure. For example, if the chain becomes too loose, the drifter might bounce on the rock face instead of drilling steadily. A sudden chain failure is a significant breakdown that stops production and can create a safety risk on the rig.

Listen for any popping or grinding sounds from the feed during operation, as this often points to a worn chain or sprockets. Regularly check the chain tension and lubrication. When installing a new chain, it is always a good idea to inspect the drive and idler sprockets for wear, as worn sprockets will drastically shorten the life of the new chain.
