It also keeps contaminants, like dust and water, from getting into your system and chewing up expensive components.

When the seals in this pack start wearing out, you’ll definitely notice it. Usually, the first sign is some external weeping around the rod or piston, or maybe a slow but steady drop in the tank level. Internally, you might experience cylinder drift, where the rod slowly extends or retracts on its own, or the component just feels sluggish and weak under load. If it's a feed cylinder, you'll get inconsistent feed pressure, which totally messes with your drilling stability and penetration rate. Sometimes you'll even hear a slight hiss or groan if a piston seal is really bypassing bad, though that's tougher to diagnose without a gauge.
