When this seal starts to give up the ghost, you'll usually notice it. First sign might be a slight weep around the rod or housing. If it’s internal, say in a cylinder, you’ll see the cylinder start to drift under load, or maybe the boom just won’t hold position like it used to. For a pump, you could get reduced flow or a noticeable drop in system pressure, making everything feel sluggish. Sometimes, you even hear a subtle bypass noise if it’s really gone bad internally, like a faint hiss or gurgle.

Replacing one of these isn't rocket science, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Always clean the bore and shaft thoroughly before you put the new one in; any grit or burrs will just chew it up again. Make sure you use the proper installation tools if you have them, or at least be super careful not to nick it with a screwdriver. And here’s the kicker: double-check its orientation. It's surprisingly easy to install a lip seal backwards when you're in a hurry, and then you're just doing the job twice.
