Without it, gravity or external forces would just push things around, making precise operations impossible and frankly, quite dangerous.

When this valve starts going south, you’ll notice things aren't staying where they should. The most common symptom is drift – a boom slowly sagging, or your feed beam creeping down even when the controls are neutral. Sometimes you might even hear a faint internal bypass noise if the poppet isn't seating right, but usually, it’s just that frustrating, slow movement. This isn't just annoying; it can mess up your drilling angle, cause premature wear on other components trying to compensate, or even create a safety hazard if a heavy component drifts unexpectedly.

Replacing one of these isn't usually a huge ordeal, but don't just swap it out and walk away. Always make sure you properly clean the area around the valve before removal to prevent contamination. After installation, bleed any air out of the cylinder it controls, and then cycle the function a few times under light load to confirm it's holding. A common oversight is not checking the pilot line for restrictions if it’s an externally piloted type; a blocked pilot can make a brand new valve act just like a worn-out one.
