It helps maintain proper alignment too, which is critical for smooth operation and keeping things from binding up.

When these plates start to go bad, you’ll usually notice a few things. First off, you might hear some new noises – a grinding, squealing, or just an overall increase in mechanical chatter from that area. The system might start feeling a bit loose, too, maybe some slop or excessive play in the feed or rotation. If it’s really worn, you could even see the feed drift a bit, or the rotation unit might not track straight. That’s because the clearances are all out of whack, and the components aren't being guided properly anymore. It’s a clear sign that the sacrificial layer has done its job, and now the underlying components are starting to take a hit.

When you're swapping these out, don't just slap the new ones in. Take a good look at the mating surfaces on the main structure – the beam or the housing. Make sure there isn't any damage or excessive wear there, because new plates won't fix a gouged-up frame. Also, and this is a common one, double-check that you've got all the shims or spacers in the kit, and that they're installed correctly to set the right clearances. Sometimes folks forget a shim or put it in the wrong spot, and then you're back to square one with premature wear or binding.
