When one of these piston motors starts giving up the ghost, you’ll usually notice a few things pretty quickly. First off, the feed or rotation might get sluggish, or it’ll start to drift when you’re trying to hold a position. Sometimes you’ll hear it whining more than usual, especially under load, which is a classic sign of internal leakage. Pressure fluctuations on the gauge for that specific circuit are also a dead giveaway; it’s struggling to maintain flow and pressure, bleeding it off internally as the clearances open up.

Look, if you're swapping one of these out, make sure you properly flush the lines and check the hydraulic oil for contamination. A lot of times, a motor fails because the system's dirty, and you definitely don't want to put a brand new one straight into that mess, only for it to fail prematurely. Always double-check your mounting bolts and the coupling alignment too – a slight misalignment can chew up a new motor's bearings and shaft seals pretty fast, leading to another premature failure you could have avoided.
