LINEAR SENSOR

551 605 76 LINEAR SENSOR is a pretty critical piece of kit for keeping your rig's feed system honest. What it does, simply put, is tell the control system exactly where the drill head or feed beam is at any given moment. It's how the machine tracks rod length, knows when to stop for the next sequence, or maintains a consistent feed rate. Without accurate feedback from this sensor, the rig would essentially be guessing its position, which, as you can imagine, isn't great for drilling straight holes or hitting target depths consistently.

When one of these linear sensors starts going bad, you'll usually notice some pretty clear symptoms in the feed system. It might get sluggish, or worse, become erratic, sometimes overshooting its target position or 'hunting' back and forth. I've seen rigs throw intermittent position error codes that are a real pain to diagnose until you trace it back to a flaky signal from one of these. You might also find the auto-drilling functions just won't engage properly, or the drill head might not retract smoothly, all because the PLC isn't getting reliable data on where things actually are.

Replacing this sensor isn't typically a huge job, but pay close attention to the mounting and, especially, the cable routing. A lot of times, the sensor itself is still okay, but the cable has been chafed or pinched somewhere along its path, leading to intermittent signals. Always check for any physical damage to the cable or connectors when you're troubleshooting. And don't forget to run through the calibration procedure after you install the new one; skipping that step will almost certainly lead to headaches down the line with inconsistent performance.
