The most common sign is often a noticeable slop or play in the articulated joint, which can lead to the boom or feed drifting a bit when you don't want it to. Sometimes you'll hear a new, distinct clunking or grinding noise during movement, especially when the rig is under load. You might also see uneven wear on adjacent components, or even some localized heat build-up if it's really binding up.
