TERMINAL STRIP

551 712 18 TERMINAL STRIP is essentially a critical junction point in the rig's electrical system, often found where high current needs to pass or where a specific control signal gets routed. Think of it as a solid anchor for your wiring, making sure power or data flows cleanly from one component to another without any hiccups. It’s not just about holding wires; it’s about maintaining that consistent electrical path, especially in a vibrating, dusty environment like a drill rig.

When one of these terminals starts to go bad, you’ll often see some pretty clear signs. Maybe the connection loosens up over time from vibration, or corrosion starts building up, especially if it's exposed to moisture or dust. What usually happens is you get intermittent power to whatever circuit it's feeding. You might notice flickering lights on the panel, or a specific function, like a hydraulic valve, acting sluggish or just cutting out for a second. Sometimes, if it's a high-current terminal, you'll even smell something hot or see discoloration around the connection point – that’s arcing happening, and it’s a definite red flag.

Replacing these isn't usually a huge job, but getting it right is important. When you're swapping one out, always make sure your new connection is clean and tight – I mean *really* tight, but don't strip it. A common mistake I see is technicians not properly cleaning the wire end or not using the right crimp tool, which leads to resistance and heat down the road. Double-check that insulation too; you don't want any stray shorts.
