It’s designed to take the brunt of those axial loads – the pushing and pulling forces – preventing them from directly chewing up the more expensive components or the actual thrust bearing itself. Think of it as the sacrificial plate that ensures the main bearing can do its job of smooth rotation or linear movement without getting overloaded axially.

When this seat starts to wear, you’ll usually notice a bit of unwanted play or excessive end float where things should be tight. In a feed system, that might show up as inconsistent feed rates or a noticeable shudder when the cylinder extends or retracts under load. If it’s in a gearbox, you might pick up a new, subtle grinding or whining noise, especially when the rig is really digging in, because the thrust bearing isn't sitting quite right and is getting hammered out of alignment.

Swapping one of these out isn't usually a massive undertaking, but it’s absolutely critical to make sure the mating surfaces are spotless and flat before you install the new one. Any old gasket material, burrs, or even just dirt left behind will cause premature wear on the new seat, and believe me, you’ll be back in there sooner than you want to be. Also, always take a quick second to double-check the orientation; sometimes these seats have a specific way they need to face to properly channel oil or support the bearing just right.
