Without it, the operator is basically blind, especially when reversing or working in tight spots. It’s a pretty straightforward electric motor, geared down to give those wiper arms the torque they need to push through mud, snow, or whatever else gets thrown at the cab glass. Visibility is non-negotiable for safety and getting the job done efficiently.

When these motors start to go, you’ll usually notice a few things. First off, the wipers might just stop working altogether, which is obvious. But sometimes, they get sluggish, moving real slow across the glass, or they might just get stuck mid-sweep. You might also hear a grinding or whining noise coming from the motor housing itself, especially if the internal gears are worn or the bearings are seizing up. That's a pretty good sign it's on its way out and you're about to lose your view.

Replacing one of these isn't usually a huge job, but make sure you check the wiring harness for corrosion or damage while you're in there. Sometimes it's not the motor itself, but a bad connection starving it of power.
