It keeps the oil where it needs to be, stops contamination from getting in, and generally makes sure your pressures hold steady. Think of it as the barrier that lets your components move without leaking all over the place or sucking in grit.

When this seal starts to go, you’ll usually notice a slow weep of hydraulic fluid around the rod or piston, or maybe even a drip if it’s really bad. Internally, if it’s a piston seal, you might see the cylinder start to drift or act sluggish under load because the fluid's bypassing it. That’s a dead giveaway it’s not holding pressure like it should, and you’re losing efficiency.

When you’re replacing one of these, always make sure the bore or rod surface is perfectly clean and smooth. Even a tiny scratch can tear a new seal right away. And don't forget to check the gland or groove for any burrs or sharp edges from the old seal. A lot of guys just slap the new one in, but taking an extra minute to prep the surface can save you a repeat job down the road.
