Over time, as a bushing wears, it creates excessive play in the joint. This seemingly small gap can make precise boom positioning very difficult, leading to poor collaring and hole alignment. The added vibration and shock loads from a loose joint also accelerate wear on hydraulic cylinders and structural components, reducing the overall reliability of the rig.

A key symptom of a worn bushing is noticeable 'slop' or movement in a joint when the boom is being positioned. During routine maintenance, check for this play and ensure proper greasing schedules are followed. Replacing worn bushings promptly prevents expensive damage to the pin and the bore itself.
