ENGINE STARTER

551 943 59 ENGINE STARTER is what gets the main diesel engine spinning over. It’s a pretty straightforward setup, really. When you hit that key or push the start button, this thing engages with the flywheel ring gear and uses battery power to crank the engine until it fires up. Without it, you're not drilling, plain and simple. It's the first step in getting any work done out on the site.

When these starters start to go, you’ll usually notice a few things. Sometimes it’s just a slow crank, like the battery's weak, even if you know it's fully charged. Other times, you get that classic 'click, click, click' sound – the solenoid is trying to engage, but the motor isn't turning. Or maybe it spins, but doesn't actually engage the flywheel, just whirs. That's often a sign the Bendix drive is sticking or worn out, not throwing the gear out properly. You'll know it's failing when the rig just won't turn over reliably.

Replacing one of these isn't usually a huge job, but it's important to get it right. Before you even pull the old one, always double-check your battery connections and ground straps; you'd be surprised how many times a 'bad starter' is just a corroded terminal or a loose connection. When you're putting the new one in, make sure all your wiring is clean and tight, especially the main power cable and the solenoid wire. And don't forget to check the mounting bolts for proper torque; you don't want it vibrating loose on the job.
