Without it doing its job, the whole telescoping action would be a real headache.

When this part starts to give up the ghost, you’ll usually notice the telescoping action getting pretty rough. It might start binding up, or you’ll hear a distinct grinding or creaking noise as the sections try to move. Sometimes, you'll see uneven wear patterns on the mating surfaces, or the whole assembly might feel sluggish and jerky when it extends or retracts. In worse cases, you could even get some noticeable drift or misalignment in the feed, which obviously messes with your hole accuracy and can put extra stress on other components. It’s not something you want to ignore.

When you're replacing one of these, always give the mating surfaces a good once-over for damage or scoring – sometimes the old part wears out because something else was already off. Make sure you clean everything thoroughly and apply the correct grease or anti-seize compound if specified. A common thing folks forget is to properly adjust any associated guides or wear pads after installation; too tight and it binds, too loose and you're back to slop and premature wear. Take your time setting it up right.
