Without it, you're looking at metal-on-metal contact pretty quick, and that's a fast track to expensive component failure and a rig sitting idle.

When one of these starts to wear out or fails, you’ll usually notice a few tell-tale signs. Often, the 'low lube' alarm on the rig's display will start popping up more frequently, even if the reservoir is full. Or, during your pre-shift walk-around, you might find critical points – like the drifter's front head or the feed chain – looking noticeably dry, maybe even showing some early signs of scuffing. Sometimes you can hear a distinct change in the pump's normal hum, or the pressure gauge on the lube manifold just sits at zero.

Swapping out a lubrication pump isn't a huge job, but you really need to make sure you properly bleed the lines after installation. Trapped air in the system is a common culprit for components still running dry, even with a brand new pump. Also, before you even think about replacing it, always check the suction filter – a clogged one can mimic a dead pump perfectly. And don't forget to confirm you're using the correct grade of grease or oil for the ambient temperature; the wrong stuff can overwork a pump or just not flow right.
