They’re absolutely essential for holding pressure and making sure the rod extends and retracts smoothly without any internal bypass. What they really do is create that tight barrier between the high-pressure side and the low-pressure side, stopping fluid from leaking past the piston or rod. If they don't do their job, you just lose power and control.

When these seals start to wear out or fail, you'll definitely notice the rig acting up. The most common thing is cylinder drift – you extend something, and it just slowly sags under its own weight or a load, even with the controls neutral. Or, if it's on a feed cylinder, you might get inconsistent penetration rates, or the drill head won't hold its position steady. Sometimes, you can even hear a faint internal bypass, a kind of hiss or groan, as fluid squirts past the worn sealing surfaces. External leaks are obvious, sure, but those internal ones are the real power killers.

Swapping these out isn't rocket science, but you've got to be meticulous. The biggest thing is making sure all the sealing surfaces – the rod, the bore, the gland – are absolutely spotless and free of any nicks or burrs. Even a tiny scratch will tear up a new seal in no time flat. And always, always pre-lube them with clean hydraulic oil before you try to install them; it helps them slide in without damage and seat correctly. Don't forget to check the torque on your gland nuts or retaining rings too; a loose one can cause early failure or even a catastrophic blow-out.
