COUPLER

COUPLER 5580 1027 04 Located inside the rock drill's rotation unit, this coupler connects the hydraulic rotation motor to the drifter's internal gearing. Its main job is to transfer the rotational force needed to turn the drill bit. It must handle high torque loads and constant vibration while maintaining a solid connection between the power source and the drilling tool.

Wear on the coupler's splines can introduce excessive play, or backlash, into the rotation system. This leads to inefficient power transfer, jerky bit rotation, and can cause damage to the shank adapter or the motor shaft. A failure of the coupler will result in a complete loss of rotation, bringing drilling to an immediate halt.

Listen for unusual clunking sounds from the drifter during rotation changes, as this often indicates a worn coupler. During a scheduled drifter service, always inspect the splines for signs of rounding or cracking. Replacing it before it fails completely can prevent a much more costly repair to the rotation motor or gearbox.
