It's a simple piece of metal, but it’s critical for keeping things aligned and preventing unintended shifts in the rig's structure or hydraulic components. Without it, things would just flop around or slide out of position, causing a real mess.

When one of these pins starts to wear down, or if it gets bent, you'll usually notice some slop in the connection it's supposed to secure. Maybe a cylinder starts to drift a little, or you hear a new rattle from a linkage that used to be tight. If it's holding something like a boom pivot, that boom might not hold its position as well, or you could even see some unexpected movement in the drill head. It’s not always a catastrophic failure right away, but that extra play eventually leads to accelerated wear on other, more expensive components. You might even see witness marks where things are rubbing that shouldn't be.

Replacing these pins isn't usually a big job, but don't just hammer a new one in and call it a day. Always check the bore it slides into for wear or ovaling; a new pin in a worn hole won't last long. And make sure whatever retainer holds it in place – a cotter pin, snap ring, or set screw – is also in good shape and installed correctly. That's often overlooked, and then the new pin just walks out.
