DUCT, AIR

618 663 69 DUCT, AIR An air duct plays a vital role in the drilling process by channeling compressed air from the rig's air supply to the drill string. This continuous flow of air is essential for effectively clearing rock cuttings and debris from the borehole as drilling progresses. Typically, these ducts run along the feed beam, connecting the air swivel or manifold to the drifter or directly to the drill string, ensuring a clear path for the drilling tools.

Maintaining proper air delivery is critical for both drilling performance and component longevity. If an air duct develops a leak or becomes obstructed, the flushing efficiency drops significantly. This can lead to regrinding of cuttings, increased wear on drill bits and rods, and slower penetration rates. In severe cases, inadequate flushing can cause the drill string to get stuck in the hole, leading to costly delays and potential damage to the entire drilling system.

Common signs of a failing air duct include a noticeable drop in air pressure at the drill bit, visible damage like cracks or tears in the duct material, or a distinct hissing sound indicating a leak. Regular visual inspections are recommended to catch wear or damage early. When an air duct shows signs of degradation, replacing it promptly is important to restore optimal flushing and protect other drill string components from premature wear.
