Without it, things would loosen up fast, leading to all sorts of play where there shouldn't be any. It's not just holding things together; it's maintaining the precise clearances and alignments that keep bigger, more expensive components from self-destructing.

When this NUT, LOCK starts to wear out or, worse, backs off, you’ll definitely notice it. Usually what happens is you start hearing new noises – maybe a distinct clunking or a persistent rattle coming from an area that used to be quiet. You might also see excessive play or wobble in a rotating assembly, or a hydraulic cylinder might start to drift slightly because its mounting point isn't as solid as it should be.
