Think of it as a sacrificial surface, or sometimes a guide, that takes the direct abuse from moving components. It helps maintain the correct clearances and keeps things from grinding directly on the main frame or housing. Without it, you'd have metal-on-metal contact where you absolutely don't want it.

When this plate starts getting thin or cracks, that's when you really notice it. You'll often hear a new kind of scraping or grinding noise coming from the area, especially during feed extension or retraction. Sometimes, if it's really gone, you might even see some slight misalignment or a bit of 'play' in the component it's meant to support or guide. Always check the mating surfaces for any damage or burrs before you put the new one on; a rough surface will chew up the new plate in no time.
