It’s not just a warning light; the rig uses this input to manage fill cycles, prevent overfilling, or sometimes even to interlock certain functions if a tank isn't topped up correctly. Think of it as a critical eye, constantly checking that you've got enough headroom in the system before things get messy or operations get restricted.

When this level switch starts acting up, you’ll usually notice some pretty annoying false alarms popping up on the display, or sometimes, even worse, it just won't register a full tank when it actually is. I've seen rigs where the auto-fill system keeps trying to pump, even though the tank's already at capacity, leading to overflows and a real mess. Or, on the flip side, the rig might think the tank is always full, even when it’s running low, which can cause other issues down the line if you're not manually checking. It can also trigger interlocks, shutting down functions unnecessarily, which really cuts into your production time.

Replacing one of these isn't usually a huge job, but always make sure you've got the system depressurized and drained down below the sensor level before you pull it out – saves you a hydraulic shower. When you're putting the new one in, double-check the O-ring or gasket seal; that's a common spot for a slow weep if it's not seated right. And don't forget to inspect the wiring harness for any chafing or corrosion, especially where it connects to the sensor. A lot of 'bad sensor' calls turn out to be just a corroded pin or a broken wire.
