When a clamping sleeve becomes worn, the shank adapter can move slightly during operation. This misalignment leads to reduced drilling speed and can cause significant damage to more expensive components. For example, a loose fit will quickly wear out the shank adapter and can even cause premature failure of the front head bushings and seals due to increased vibration.

Check the sleeve for any visible cracks, scoring, or an oval shape during regular drifter service.
