708 403 47 DRILL ROD is one of those critical wear rings inside the front head that keeps the piston aligned and moving true. It’s basically a guide, making sure everything slides smoothly without binding up, which is crucial for getting proper impact energy through to the bit. Without it doing its job, the whole impact mechanism starts to get out of whack pretty fast.

When this wear ring starts to go, you’ll usually notice a drop in drilling penetration. The piston won't be hitting as hard or as consistently, and you might even feel increased vibration through the rig. Sometimes, if it's really worn, you can hear a distinct knocking sound from the front head, which tells you the piston is starting to wobble and make contact where it shouldn't. Usually what happens is the energy gets lost in friction and misalignment instead of going into the rock.

Replacing this isn't too complicated, but it's important to make sure you clean out the bore thoroughly before pressing in the new one. Any burrs or old material left behind will just chew up the new part quickly. And don't forget to check the piston itself for any scoring or damage while you're in there; sometimes the wear on this bushing is a symptom of a bigger issue with the piston, not just the problem itself.
