That means when the motor spins, whatever's mounted on that shaft — whether it's driving a pump or a feed chain — it's turning with it, no slip, no play. It's a simple but critical piece for transmitting power without losing an ounce of torque.

When one of these taper locks starts to give up, you’ll usually notice it first as a bit of a wobble or even a distinct clunking sound coming from the area where it's supposed to be holding tight. What happens is that friction fit loosens up, and the pulley or sprocket isn't truly fixed to the shaft anymore. Under load, it'll try to slip, which can lead to inconsistent power delivery, maybe a sluggish feed, or even premature wear on belts or chains because they're not running true. Sometimes, if it's really slipping, you can even feel some heat coming off the hub.

Replacing one of these isn't rocket science, but you gotta make sure both the shaft and the bore of the component are absolutely clean and free of any burrs or rust before you put the new one in.
