THIMBLE

740 103 05 THIMBLE is essentially a hardened sleeve or a guide, designed to give a smooth, protected path for a hose, cable, or sometimes even a pin connection. What it does is keep whatever’s passing through it from rubbing directly against a frame, a bracket, or another moving part that would otherwise quickly wear it down. It’s there to take the abuse, acting as a sacrificial wear surface so your more critical components don’t get chewed up prematurely.

When this THIMBLE starts wearing thin, or if it cracks, that’s when you’ll notice problems. Usually what happens is the component it’s supposed to protect – a hydraulic hose, for instance – starts rubbing directly against the frame or bracket. You’ll often see premature wear on that hose, maybe even a shiny spot or a slight bulge where it’s being pinched or abraded. If it’s guiding a cable, you might start seeing frayed strands, which is a clear sign it’s not doing its job anymore and you’re risking a bigger failure.

Replacing one of these isn't usually a complex job, but it’s crucial to inspect the area around it thoroughly for any secondary damage. Make sure the new THIMBLE seats correctly and isn't binding. A common oversight I see is technicians forgetting to properly inspect the hose or cable that was running through the old, worn THIMBLE. If that hose already has significant wear, putting a new THIMBLE on it won't save it from failing soon after.
