When this WASHER starts to give up, you might not notice it right away, but it’ll eventually show. Usually what happens is the fastener it’s supposed to support starts to lose its grip. You might hear a subtle rattle or a new kind of vibration coming from that area. If it’s in a critical spot, like on a pump mount or a structural bracket, that loose connection can lead to accelerated wear on the bolt itself, or even worse, on the main component it’s holding. I’ve seen bolts shear off because the WASHER beneath it deformed, letting the bolt work itself loose and fatigue.

Replacing these isn't rocket science, but there are a couple of things to remember. Always check the mating surfaces where the WASHER sits – make sure they’re clean and flat. Any burrs or crud will mess with your torque and the WASHER's effectiveness. And for crying out loud, don't just reuse an old, flattened, or galled WASHER. If it’s seen a lot of service, especially in a high-load or high-vibration area, just toss it and put in a new one. It’s cheap insurance against bigger headaches down the road.
