Without it, or if it's not torqued right, you'd have a mess pretty quick. It's a critical piece for maintaining system pressure and preventing external contamination from getting in.

When this SPECIAL NUT starts to give up, usually what happens is you'll begin to see weeping around the cylinder rod or shaft. It might just be a little dampness at first, but it'll get worse. That's because the nut's either backed off a bit, or its threads are worn, which means the seals aren't getting the squeeze they need. It's easy to overlook a damaged thread on the mating part, which will just chew up your new nut or prevent it from seating correctly. And remember, proper torque is key; too loose, it leaks, too tight, you crush the seals and they fail even faster. Also, give the rod or shaft a good once-over for any nicks or scratches that could tear up your fresh seals.
