It's the initial kick, the heavy-duty electric motor that engages with the flywheel, drawing a serious amount of current from the batteries to get that crankshaft turning. Without it doing its job, that engine isn't firing up, and you're not drilling, plain and simple. It's all about getting that initial inertia to start the combustion cycle.

When this part starts to wear out, you'll usually notice it pretty quickly. Often, the first sign is a slow, labored crank, especially on colder mornings, or maybe it takes a few tries to get the engine to catch. Sometimes you just get a single click from the solenoid, or a series of rapid clicks, but no actual turning of the engine. That can point to worn brushes, a bad solenoid, or even just a tired armature not getting enough juice to spin properly. It's a real headache when it happens out in the field.

Replacing one isn't the worst job, but always, always check your battery connections and ground straps first. You'd be surprised how many times a 'bad STARTER' is just corroded terminals or a loose cable causing a voltage drop. Make sure your batteries are actually charged too. When you do swap it, ensure the new one seats correctly and all the mounting bolts are torqued down right; you don't want it vibrating loose and chewing up your flywheel ring gear. And remember to disconnect the batteries before you start wrenching on those heavy gauge cables.
