Its structural integrity is essential for maintaining the precise alignment between the drifter, the drill steel, and the hole. A straight, undamaged beam allows for smooth travel, which translates directly into faster penetration and longer life for consumable drilling tools.

Any damage, such as bending from a rockfall or twisting from operational stress, directly compromises drilling accuracy. For example, even a slightly bent feed beam will cause the drill string to bind, leading to crooked holes and putting excessive side-load on the drifter's shank and front bushing. This misalignment not only slows down the entire operation but also significantly increases the risk of breaking drill rods.

Visually inspect the beam for straightness and look for any cracks, especially around mounting points and welds, as part of your regular machine checks.
