In underground drilling rigs, this component is often found within the drifter's rotation unit, driving the drill bit, or as part of the feed mechanism, moving the drifter along the feed beam. It’s designed to convert and transmit torque, ensuring the drill bit rotates effectively or the feed system advances and retracts smoothly during operation.

Consistent power transfer is critical for efficient drilling, and the integrity of the pinion directly impacts this. If the gear teeth become worn, chipped, or break, the entire drive system can lose its ability to function correctly. This leads to a significant loss of drilling performance, increased cycle times, and ultimately, costly downtime. Maintaining a reliable pinion ensures the drill can achieve its designed penetration rates and maintain productivity in demanding mining environments.

Common signs of a failing pinion include unusual grinding or clunking noises from the drive system, jerky motion, or a complete inability to rotate or feed.
