It bears the heavy loads of the feed and drifter while allowing the operator to precisely place the drill for each hole. Its design is fundamental to the overall reach and stability of the entire boom assembly.

Damage or excessive wear to this component directly impacts drilling accuracy and safety. For example, when the pin bores in the arm become worn and oval, the boom will have noticeable play, making it difficult to collar a hole correctly. A bent or cracked arm compromises the structural integrity of the rig and can lead to a sudden failure.

Visually inspect the arm for cracks, especially around welds and connection points, as part of your regular maintenance checks. If you notice persistent boom drift or sloppiness that isn't solved by new pins and bushings, the arm itself may be worn and require replacement.
