PIN, SPLIT

792253 PIN, SPLIT is one of those small but absolutely critical fasteners that keeps bigger, more expensive stuff from coming apart on the rig. Think of it as the final safeguard. It's usually threaded through a hole in a shaft or a bolt, often after a castle nut, to prevent that component from backing out or rotating loose. It’s not carrying a huge load directly, but it's making sure the main load-bearing parts stay put, like securing a cylinder pin or keeping a wheel hub nut from unwinding.

When this little guy starts to wear out or, worse, breaks, you'll usually notice it pretty quick. The most common sign is a new, irritating rattle or a bit of play where there shouldn't be any. If it's securing a pin, that pin might start to walk out, leading to misalignment or even a complete detachment of a linkage. For a castle nut, the nut could back off, creating excessive slop in a joint, which then puts undue stress on other components and can accelerate their wear. You might even hear a distinct clunking sound during operation as things shift around.

Always, and I mean always, replace these with a new one during reassembly. Don't try to straighten out an old one and reuse it; they're designed for one-time deformation and trying to bend them back just weakens the material, making it prone to snapping. Make sure you splay the legs properly after installation to lock it in place. A common oversight is not spreading the legs enough, which means it can still vibrate loose over time, defeating its whole purpose.
