Without it doing its job, you're looking at a mess and a quick loss of system integrity.

When this little component starts to wear out, you’ll usually spot a weep or a slow drip of hydraulic fluid, or maybe even a full-blown leak if it really lets go. If it's on a cylinder, you might see the rod getting slick with oil, or if it’s an internal SEAL, you could get some pressure bypass. That often leads to a cylinder that drifts, or just feels sluggish and weak when it should be firm.
