Think of it as the handshake between a hose and a valve, or a pump and a cylinder. If this connection isn't solid, you're not moving anything right, or you're making a mess.

When this male connector starts to go bad, usually what happens is you'll see a weep, then a drip, and eventually a full-blown leak. You might notice an oil sheen around the connection point, or even a visible puddle forming under the rig after it's been running for a bit. Sometimes, if it's really worn or cracked internally, you won't just get a leak; you'll get a pressure drop in that circuit, leading to sluggish movement or inconsistent function of whatever component it's feeding.
