Wear in this component often begins with the needle bearings inside the caps. If it fails, you'll notice significant vibration through the machine frame, which can lead to damage in the transmission or differential seals. A complete failure results in a loss of drive, stopping the machine and causing significant downtime.

Listen for a distinct clunking sound when engaging forward or reverse, or a squeaking noise that increases with speed, as these are early signs of wear. During inspection, check for any play by trying to rotate the driveshaft by hand. If it has grease fittings, regular lubrication is the best way to extend its service life.
