RING, BACK-UP
The 866 432 99A RING, BACK-UP is a critical, often overlooked component that supports primary seals in high-pressure hydraulic systems. It prevents seal extrusion, extending the life of your main O-rings and preventing premature leaks on your drilling rig. Always inspect it during seal replacements.

Full Technical Description
866 432 99A RING, BACK-UP is usually there to keep the main O-ring or seal from squishing out of its groove when the pressure really ramps up. Think of it as a little wall, giving that primary seal something solid to lean against so it doesn't get chewed up or blow out. Without it, especially in high-pressure hydraulic circuits on a drifter or feed cylinder, your main seal wouldn't last five minutes before it starts extruding into the clearance gap.
When this little guy starts to wear out, gets flattened, or cracks, it stops doing its job of supporting the primary seal. What you'll usually see first is the main seal itself failing prematurely – maybe it's chewed up, or you've got a slow but steady leak that just keeps coming back even after you've replaced the O-ring. Sometimes, if it's really gone, you'll get a sudden, catastrophic leak, especially when the system hits peak pressure. It's a pain because you're constantly chasing leaks that seem to come from a perfectly good O-ring, but it's actually this backup ring that's let it down and allowed the O-ring to fail.
When you're replacing a seal assembly, always, and I mean *always*, check the backup ring. Don't just assume it's fine because it's not the primary seal. Look for any cracks, flattening, or signs of extrusion itself. It's easy to overlook because it's not the part that's actively sealing, but skipping this check means you'll be back in there doing the job again way sooner than you want to be. Make sure it's seated correctly too; a twisted one is as bad as a worn one.
