On a drill rig, these often sit in guide rails for feed beams, or maybe even in the carousel arm, keeping things moving smoothly without galling up.

When this plastic sheet starts to wear thin, or if it cracks, you'll definitely notice things getting a bit sloppy. Usually what happens is the component it's guiding, say a feed beam, will start to develop excessive play. You might hear a new clunking noise during operation, especially when the rig is moving or positioning. Sometimes, if it wears unevenly, you'll see the guided part start to bind up or move sluggishly, putting extra strain on the hydraulic cylinders trying to push it along.

Replacing these isn't usually a huge job, but it's one of those things that gets overlooked until a bigger problem crops up. When you're in there, always check the mating surface on the metal component it slides against. If that's already got grooves worn into it, a new plastic sheet won't last long. Make sure to clean out any old debris or gunk before fitting the new one; a smooth, clean surface is key for it to do its job right.
