It’s critical for maintaining that differential pressure across the piston face, which is how the cylinder actually does its work.

When this seal starts to go, you’ll usually notice a few things. First off, you might see some internal leakage, which means the cylinder won't hold its position under load as well as it should – you get drift. Or, if it's a feed cylinder, the penetration rate might get inconsistent, or you'll have to push more pressure to get the same force. Sometimes, you'll even hear a slight hiss or feel the cylinder getting hotter than usual because of the fluid bypassing and generating friction. It's not always obvious, but that sluggish or inconsistent movement is a big giveaway.

Replacing one of these isn't rocket science, but you gotta be careful not to nick it during installation. Always make sure the piston groove and cylinder bore are clean and free of any burrs or sharp edges that could damage the new seal. And here's a common one: don't forget to check the condition of the piston rod seal and wiper at the same time. If one's gone, the other might not be far behind, or external contamination could have caused the PISTON SEAL to fail in the first place.
