Without it working right, your carriage isn't going anywhere, or at least not reliably.

When these solenoids start to act up, you’ll definitely notice it in the carriage's behavior. Usually what happens is you get sluggish movement, or it might not respond immediately when you hit the feed lever. Sometimes, the carriage will even drift a bit when you expect it to hold steady. You might also hear a faint buzzing or a weak click from the valve block itself, which is often the solenoid coil struggling to actuate the spool correctly. This kind of inconsistent performance isn't just annoying; it can really mess with your drilling accuracy and even lead to premature bit wear if the feed pressure isn't consistent.

Swapping one of these out isn't usually a marathon, but always, always make sure you've depressurized the system before you start wrenching. When you're troubleshooting, don't just assume the coil is dead; give the electrical connector a good once-over. Corrosion or loose pins on the connector are a surprisingly common culprit, and sometimes a quick clean-up is all it takes. Also, before you condemn the whole thing, try the manual override if it has one; sometimes they just get a bit sticky and need to be worked a few times to free up the spool.
