It also gives the fastener a nice, smooth surface to bear against, making sure you get a consistent torque reading when you tighten things down.

When this WASHER starts to give up, you might not notice it right away, but it’ll eventually show. Usually what happens is the fastener it’s supposed to support starts to lose its grip. You might hear a subtle rattle or a new kind of vibration coming from that area. If it’s in a critical spot, like on a pump mount or a structural bracket, that loose connection can lead to accelerated wear on the bolt itself, or even worse, on the main component it’s holding.
