Full Technical Description
885 635 79 SPRING-TYPEE STRAIGHT PIN is one of those small but critical fasteners that keeps things from rattling loose or spinning when they shouldn't. On a rig, you'll often find these pins holding a shaft in a bore, maybe securing a clevis to a cylinder rod, or keeping a lever pinned to its pivot point. It's not just a solid chunk of metal; being a spiral, it's got a bit of spring to it, which helps absorb some of the constant vibration and shock that's just part of life on a drill. It basically locks components together, making sure they move as one unit or stay put where they're supposed to.
When this pin starts to wear down or gets wallowed out, usually what happens is you'll notice some play developing in whatever it's supposed to be securing. If it's in a linkage, you might feel a bit of slop in the controls, or if it's holding a small shaft, that shaft might start to wobble or even shift slightly. Over time, that tiny bit of movement can turn into a real problem, causing premature wear on other, more expensive components. You might even hear a faint rattling or clicking sound coming from the area, especially under load or vibration, which is often your first real clue that something's not quite right.
Replacing one of these is usually a pretty quick job, but don't just bang a new one in and call it a day. Always take a good look at the bore it came out of and the components it was holding. Make sure the hole isn't ovaled out or otherwise damaged, because if it is, that new pin won't last long either. Sometimes, folks forget to check for wear on the mating parts; if the pin failed, it might have already started chewing up the shaft or the housing. A little inspection now saves you from doing the same job again much sooner than you'd like.
