When this thing starts to go, you'll usually notice it's not retracting properly, or maybe it's frayed around the edges where it rubs. Sometimes the buckle mechanism gets sticky, or it just won't cinch down tight anymore. The big one, though, is when the webbing itself gets stretched or torn; that's when it's really not doing its job, and you've got an operator who isn't properly secured, which is a major safety issue. Always check the anchor bolts and the mounting plate for any signs of fatigue or cracking when you're swapping it out; sometimes those take a beating too, especially if the old belt was loose for a while.
