When this SPOOL starts getting worn, or if it's scored up, you'll usually notice things getting sluggish. A common giveaway is inconsistent pressure readings on a gauge, or sometimes you'll even hear a slight 'hiss' as oil leaks past the worn lands internally, essentially bypassing where it should be going. It’s like trying to push water through a leaky hose; you just don't get the full force at the end.

Replacing one of these isn't too bad, but always make sure you've got the system completely depressurized first. And here's the kicker: when you pull the old one out, give the bore a real good inspection for any scoring or debris.
