Its primary role is to absorb hydraulic energy from the pump during the piston's return stroke and then release that energy in a rapid burst. This cycle creates the high-frequency impact force required to fracture rock effectively.

A correctly functioning accumulator is essential for maintaining the drifter's rated performance. If the internal nitrogen pre-charge is too low, the impact energy will drop significantly, slowing down your penetration rate and increasing stress on other hydraulic components. It also dampens pressure spikes, protecting hoses and seals from premature failure.

A common sign of a failing accumulator is a noticeable loss of drilling power or a 'soft' hitting sound from the drifter.
