A properly functioning compressor not only ensures clean holes but also helps minimize wear on expensive drill bits and rods by preventing them from re-grinding cleared material. It is a major assembly, usually mounted on the rig carrier.

A noticeable drop in flushing air pressure or the unit taking longer than usual to build pressure are common symptoms of wear. Also, listen for any unusual noises during operation. Regular maintenance should include checking the oil level and quality, and frequently cleaning or replacing the air intake filters to prevent dust ingestion.
