BG 008 119 29A BOOM The BOOM serves as the primary positioning arm on a drill rig, connecting the chassis to the feed beam. Its hydraulic cylinders provide the force to lift, swing, and extend the entire drilling unit. This range of motion allows the operator to accurately place the rock drill against the face to execute the planned drilling pattern.

Structural integrity of the BOOM is directly linked to the rig's overall performance and safety. Any bending, cracking, or excessive wear in its pivot points can make precise drilling impossible. For example, when the pins and bushings wear out, the resulting play in the BOOM makes it difficult to maintain hole alignment, slowing down the entire drilling cycle. A compromised BOOM structure also presents a significant safety risk on site.

Look for visible cracks in the steel structure, especially around welds and connection points. Any noticeable looseness or 'slop' during BOOM movement indicates worn-out pins and bushings that need attention. A full BOOM replacement is typically necessary after severe structural damage or when accumulated wear makes repairs impractical.
